Sonic Work: Music, Labor, Value
A Special Issue of the Journal for Popular Music Studies

We are interested in papers from a variety of academic fields and sonic contexts that address issues of music, labor, and value broadly conceived. Making music involves labor of various sorts, whether playing an instrument, chopping up a sample, laying down lyrics, or performing for an audience. These practices resonate in and with urban and transnational soundscapes. Taking into account the changing technologies of production, circulation and listening, making music connects in literal and metaphoric ways to making money and making a living. At the same time, music is posited as detached from so-called worldly values in various ways-religious music is taken to be spiritually transformative, popular music is often escapist, courtly music is understood as linking political power to various ideas of aesthetic beauty. Yet in all of these cases, music converts aesthetic value into material value in various ways. And while some musicians struggle to maintain control of their music away from the effects of commodification, others strive for fame and fortune and seek to brand and package their music for mass consumption. We seek to elaborate on a range of aspects of the dynamics inhering in music, labor, and value, from the meaning and nature of musical practice to the transformations linking aesthetic, economic, moral, and linguistic modes of value. We are also interested in pieces that work with sound beyond music proper. Papers should be approximately 7000 words.

A Symposium organized by the Sound Studies Group, Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art & Culture

Carleton University, Ottawa March 9 – 11, 2012

Keynote speakers: Dr. Jonathan Sterne (McGill University) Dr. Tim J. Anderson (Old Dominion University)

This conference is about the history and significance of stereo sound reproduction in aural culture. Stereo is everywhere: the whole culture and industry of music and sound became organized around the principle of stereo during the mid twentieth century. But nothing about this – not the invention or acceptance or ubiquity of stereo – was inevitable. Nor did the aesthetic conventions, technological objects, and listening practices required to make sense of stereo emerge fully formed, out of the blue.

We invite paper proposals on any aspect of the history, culture and analysis of stereo sound, from fields such as popular music studies and ethno/musicology, sound and media studies, sociology, gender, film theory, and science and technology studies. Presentations will be 20 minutes. Proposals should be no more than 300 words; include a brief bio & contact info (100 words).

Being Cultural is an ambitious collection of original readings which introduces students to key theory and key issues within cultural studies and popular culture. Bringing together established writers such as Andy Bennett, Douglas Kellner, Chris Rojek, Barry Smart and John Storey with academics researching cultural texts in new and innovative ways, the book challenges our common-sense notions of ‘culture’, placing debates centrally within the power dynamics and dominant meaning-making of capitalist society. In understanding the production and consumption of such texts, the book outlines theoretical discussion from the Frankfurt School, British Cultural Studies, Semiotics, Subcultural theory, and Postmodernism, as well as investigating special topics such as digital media, sport, advertising, social networking sites, celebrity, video games, the body, cinema, reality TV, and issues of gender and ethnicity. With a total of twenty-five chapters presented in a user-friendly style — including chapter summaries and suggestions for further reading from the authors — this is an essential text for any student new to the subject.

Contributions are sought for an interdisciplinary collection of original essays focused on DJ cultures, expanding on the special DJ-culture issue of 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture'.

In order to stimulate a rich understanding of DJ cultures, this edited volume aims to bring such scholarly activity together by specifically addressing technological, commercial and power dynamics in DJ practices and their position in wider socio-historical processes. - Discursive production of subjectivities in the form of spirituality, sexuality or gender dynamics;

Papers will be accepted which deal with related areas and themes.

The 2011 meeting of Madness will run alongside the third of our projects on Strangers, Aliens and Foreigners and we anticipate holding sessions in common between the two projects. We welcome any papers or panels considering the problems or addressing issues that cross both projects.

Papers will be considered on any related theme. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 25th March 2011. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 22nd July 2011.

300 word abstracts should be submitted to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats, following this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

Sonic Doom: Decay, Disease, and Destruction in Music

From the Requiem Mass to death metal, from mourning to torture, music has long been used as a means of evoking, communicating, and sometimes creating decay, disease, and destruction. Music can represent otherwise inexpressible states of sublimity and pain, and can function as a means of representing, mediating, and understanding violence and loss. We invite you to join us in opening new dialogues on the darker side of musical and sonic culture. The many possible avenues of inquiry include, but are not limited to, investigations of violence, death, and disease in music, the destructive or restorative possibilities of sound, the effects of music and sound on the body, and questions of decadence and decay.

ECHO: A Music-Centered Journal is pleased to announce its fifth annual conference, “Sonic Doom: Decay, Disease, and Destruction in Music,” to be held at UCLA on May 13-14. Scholars from all disciplinary and methodological backgrounds are invited to submit proposals for papers on this theme. We also welcome proposals for presentations that deviate from the standard paper format, including performances, lecture recitals, multimedia work, etc. Presentations will each be twenty minutes long (around 2400 words), followed by ten minutes for discussion.

Individual presenters should submit an abstract of 300 words or less, and should also include: 1) the paper or presentation title; 2) the author's name and a brief biography (50-100 words); 3) institutional affiliation and contact information; 4) audio-visual requirements.

Proposals for pre-arranged panels of two or three papers are also welcome (although individual papers from panel submissions might be selected separately). Panel proposals should include all of the above requirements for each member of the panel, as well as a separate, more general description of the panel's overall theme (200-250 words).

Submissions must be received by March 1, 2011 and may be sent electronically to echoconf@ucla.edu (please put "Echo Conference Submission" and your last name in the subject line). Files must be saved in .doc format, and must include your last name in the file name.
